Excellent replacement key vs. the dealer's

I broke my HHR's one and only key and was forced to get a replacement from the dealer for $32. After that my frugality demanded that I seek something more reasonable as a backup, and this was it! I had it cut at True Value for $2, and programmed it myself. The red color is just a great bonus.

worth 5 stars absolutely

We tried to take it to Wal-mart, but they said they could not cut it because they only cut by set patterns that are numbered. So we had a local locksmith address with us and took it there. It was a place that cut keys with the old fashioned key cutting machine. We told him we had a way to program it and he cut it for us. My husband and I went out to the car and he did the programming like the instructions said to do it. He had to take the key in and out a couple of times because we did not have the written instructions with us, but once he completed it correctly it worked. Fantastic! Just want to explain why we decided to get the key in the first place. I had lost my key and fob last Friday. We spent the next 16 hours or so trying to find them, checking, checking rechecking over and over but could not find them. I decided that even if I found them I would still order this and the fob. And what a relief the next day when I took the car out of the garage in the b right sunlight, looked under the drivers seat with my head all the way down to the asphalt on our drive and spotted my tag and key holder wedged next to the seat by the metal part of the seat that is bolted to the floor. This is the second time I lost my keys, the first time it was in the passenger seat next to the door, this time it was on the side between the seats. It makes me wonder how many people sell their cars with an extra set tucked into places like this in their cars. The fob we are going to hold on to until we take the car in for any other reason, oil change or whatever and have the fob programmed, but we are incredibly happy we found these items that saved us a bundle so far. Our dealership quoted over $200 for both pieces and programming, so far we are somewhere in the $55 range with these two items, the key cutting was only $1.50. We only have to add maybe $25 to program the fob.
